Welcome to Wild Weather! We'll provide five days of reading lessons designed to engage your child in an exploration of different kinds of weather.

Vocabulary & Language: Discuss Winter Words

• Think of words that describe winter. Look at the pictures in the story if you need ideas.
• Make a list of words about winter.
• Share your list.

Project: Make a Snow Person

• Use paper plates of different sizes to make a snow person.
• Draw a face.
• Glue on paper arms, a hat, a scarf, and so on. Give your snow person a name.

• Imagine you are the girl in the story.
• Write a thank-you letter to the squirrels who helped you.
• Complete this letter:

Hands-On Activity: Make Snow

• Get a small bowl and 1 cup of baking soda.
• Add 1 tablespoon of water.
• Mix with a plastic fork.
• Add more tablespoons of water until a “snow-like” texture forms.
• Make a small snowball!

Research Connection: Learn about Animals in Winter

• Research how different animals spend the winter. Look online with an adult or in nonfiction books.
• Write or draw what you learned about animals that hibernate, migrate, or stay in place.

Vocabulary & Language: Practice Fluency

• Reread pages 2 and 3. Note the comma at the end of page 2. It tells you the rest of the sentence is on the next page.
• Practice reading the two pages of text smoothly, pausing at the comma before reading on.
• Talk with a partner about why it is important to pay attention to commas.

Response Writing: Write About Weather

• Think about what you do during different types of weather.
• Divide a big sheet of paper into three parts. On each part, write or draw what you do when it is rainy, windy, and snowy.
• Label each part with the matching weather word.

Project: Make a Weather Book

• Draw or cut from old magazines or printed images pictures about the weather.
• Glue the pictures on pieces of paper.
• Sort the pages into groups, like rainy, snowy, sunny, and windy.
• Group the pages together with a title page: My Weather Book.

This week you've learned about different kinds of weather. Today read and talk more about how weather makes you feel.

Hands-On Activity: Write a Poem

• Choose a type of weather and write a poem about it. What words describe the weather? How does the weather make you feel?

Family Support Be a weather reporter! Have children tell about the weather outside and how they should dress for the day. Tell them to use words that describe what it is like, such as sunny, hot, windy, or cloudy.
