Our science curricula, high-quality instructional materials (HQIM) grounded in coherent phenomena storylines, are designed for easy implementation.
Dr. Carey Sneider and Peter McLaren, both former members of the NGSS writing team, helped shape how HMH integrates engineering, phenomena, and the Three Dimensions of Learning into instruction.
A phenomena-based learning approach engages students in deep thinking and learning about real science. Science is not a “sit and get” experience, but one where students do, participate, and grow.
HMH’s transadaptation and equitable Spanish support span K–8 science. Student editions, readers, and the digital platform fully support Spanish speakers. Our multilingual glossary covers 12 languages, plus a data-secure, AI system for translation into other languages.
HMH Into Science addresses the needs of busy elementary teachers with science instruction that combines hands-on learning, literacy connections, and student-centered exploration. With kindergarten FUNomenal Stories flip charts, Station Activity Cards (Grades 1–2), FUNomenal Readers (Grades 1–5), and consumable Student Activity Guides (Grades K–5), students are actively engaged, and teachers find lesson planning quick and impactful.
Our fully equitable HMH ¡Arriba las Ciencias! Spanish offering was developed using transadaptation for the best language development support.
HMH Into Science is a flexible, phenomena-based, student-centered science solution, with the perfect balance of rigor and accessibility to make teaching science less intimidating and more engaging.
Into Science provides educators with the flexibility to implement their NGSS or NGSS-like standards in a sequence that meets their needs without having to purchase or navigate extraneous content.
For students needing Spanish support, HMH ¡Arriba las Ciencias! was created using transadaptation and provides an equitable Spanish experience.
Support young learners with science instruction that combines hands-on learning, literacy connections, and student-centered exploration. HMH Science Dimensions and HMH ¡Dimensiones de las Ciencias! are built to engage students in NGSS three-dimensional learning activities.
For students needing Spanish support, HMH ¡Dimensiones de las Ciencias! is a fully equitable option.
Students are more engaged and learn more meaningfully through investigative inquiry. HMH Science Dimensions and HMH ¡Dimensiones de las Ciencias! are built on this approach. Students conduct hands-on investigations, define questions and objectives, make claims, and identify evidence—in short, they take charge and fully engage in doing science.
HMH ¡Dimensiones de las Ciencias! is the equitable Spanish version that tailors support for Spanish-speaking students.
HMH Science Dimensions Biology, Biología, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Space Science were built for the NGSS and phenomena-based, three-dimensional instruction. The rigorous science learning opportunities support high school science teaching and deeper disciplinary understanding than traditional lecture-based approaches.
The fully Spanish Biología allows multilingual learners an additional layer of support.
While ScienceSaurus and CienciaSauro are digitally included with HMH Into Science and HMH Science Dimensions for Grades K–8, the print and digital handbooks can be used with any science or reading program. These student-friendly books reinforce science topics in a fun, visually engaging way.

HQIM science materials are phenomena-driven, hands-on, three-dimensional, and built for the NGSS. The NGSS Lesson Screener tool provides a comprehensive look at what the big shifts are in moving to an NGSS instructional model. Some of the highlights include students making sense of phenomena and designing solutions, utilizing three-dimensional learning, and lessons flowing together in a coherent storyline. These are all aspects built into HMH Into Science’s K–8 core curriculum and HMH Science Dimensions’ K–12 curriculum.
HMH Into Science is a K–8 core curriculum, and HMH Science Dimensions is for K–12. ScienceSaurus is a supplemental science resource that can be used to support any core science or ELA curriculum.
The three dimensions of learning as defined by the NGSS have been woven together throughout HMH’s science core curricula, and our programs are fully aligned to the NGSS. The Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) are the “what” or the topics being addressed, while the Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) are the “how” sense is being made, and the Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs) are the deeper underlying themes of science used to explain the concept at hand and that can be extended to other science topics.
HMH takes an ABC (Activity Before Content) approach to hands-on learning as research shows students’ critical thinking is improved if they are given the opportunity to work through an activity before direct instruction. This ensures student knowledge is grounded in their own experiences. Lessons are built on the research-proven 5E model so that students Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate throughout their learning journey.
Phenomena-based learning involves exposing students to a scientific phenomenon or engineering problem and then guiding students through activities that provide evidence for them to construct a scientific explanation or solution. Inquiry-based learning involves encouraging students to explore their own questions and reflect on what they have learned. Both methods are central to the approach HMH programs take to engage students and develop their critical thinking skills while building their depth of conceptual understanding.
