The instructional resources below, ideal for at-home learning, are designed to help students build understanding of numbers and how objects are alike or different. Keep checking back for new resources posted each week!
Activity 1: My Number Story
This project uses a fall theme to build an understanding of numbers from 1 to 5. Read the storybook aloud and have your child follow along. Have your child count the dots next to each number word to verify that the dots illustrate each number. Use dried beans to help count.
Your child can complete the pages by drawing a picture to illustrate each set of objects. Discuss how the objects will illustrate the fall theme. Once the pages have been completed, suggest that their book can be finished by drawing a picture on the storybook cover. Encourage your child to draw a picture that tells about the story.
Materials Needed
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Dried beans
- Plain paper
- Teacher guide
- Student storybook sheet
Print the pages of the Student sheet and fold them in half to make a storybook. Have your child write their work on the printed pages.
Extend the Lesson
What are some objects you might see in the fall? (Acorns would be one example.) Make a list of them. Then think of a number from 1 to 5 and, using plain paper and crayons (or color pencils), draw that number of one of the fall objects on your list. Repeat with a different number and a different object.
Activity 2: Alike and Different
This project uses attributes of two- and three-dimensional figures to build an understanding of comparing and to determine which figures are alike or different.
Read the storybook aloud and have your child follow along. Explain to your child that they will draw and color pictures to show how objects are alike or how they are different.
Once your child has completed the pages, have them turn back to their storybook cover. Encourage your child to draw a picture that tells about their story. For example, a child might draw two objects that are alike in some way.
Materials Needed
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Plain paper
- Teacher guide
- Student storybook sheet
Print the pages of the Student sheet and fold them in half to make a storybook. Have your child write their work on the printed pages.
Extend the Lesson
Pick an object in your home. Find another object that is like the first object. Draw each object and describe how the two are alike. Using the first object, find an object that is different from it. Draw each object and describe how the two are different.
Activity 3: Fall Festival—Math Story
Using stories to teach your child math is a fun way for your child to learn math vocabulary.
The Fall Festival activities allow your child to learn about the numbers 1 thru 5 and their order.
Materials Needed
View the sheets on your device and have your child write their work on a piece of paper.
Use the Teacher Guide to assist your child with the lesson.
Extend the Lesson: Connect to Science
Use the last page of your Guide to connect your child’s learning to science.
